Reflections
on Celia Cruz...
Just after her death, I wrote this look back on her life for Newsday.
Pocho Man: Lalo López Alcaraz is a modern-day Chicano prankster/cartoonist who pulled off one of the great performance-artist feats of the '90s--he invented a nonexistent Conservative Hispanic politician and appeared on the talk show Sevcec! Here's the wacky story.
The Making of Summer of Sam: I went up to one of my old neighborhoods in the Bronx to do a piece on the filming of this underrated Spike Lee classic. Johnny Leggs was lurking but best remembered for an interview with then-obscure Adrien Brody with his mother, Village Voice photographer Sylvia Plachy, puttering around his trailer.
A Little Bit of Justice: The conviction of Officer Anthony Livoti was a landmark in the fight against police brutality. It was probably the central case in the activist career of the late, great Richie Perez.
